Most of us have to make purchasing decisions every day, so you might think that buying a new mattress won’t be such a big deal.
However, when the time comes, it’s often a lot more difficult to part from your old mattress than it should be. Call it separation anxiety or unhealthy attachment, but most people tend to ignore the signs that their mattress is dying until it is too late.
Then, when you finally make the decision to move on, you end up not having enough time to do proper research and testing. In the end, because there are so many mattress types out there, you may end up with a more expensive product that doesn’t fulfil all your sleeping needs.
To make sure this doesn’t happen to you, I put together a short guide with the most common signs that show up just before the demise of your favorite sleeping surface. When you start noticing some of them, it’s probably time to start the search for a new mattress.
1: The age
How old is your mattress? Just like some electronics, a mattress that’s been constantly used should be replaced every 7 to 10 years (according to Consumer Reports magazine). This may be a bit of a shock if you bought a mattress with 20-years warranty, but John from Try Mattress says that “warranties don’t cover the overall comfort of the mattress. The warranty only covers technical aspects such as springs or production defects so you shouldn’t expect for the comfort feature to last as long as the warranty”.
So, if your current mattress is older than 8 years, it’s time to consider a new one.
2: You wake up tired
We sleep in order to gain some rest, so if your first wish when you wake up is to swim in a tub of coffee, maybe your bed is not as comfy as it used to be. In time, a mattress loses the features that made it such a great sleep companion causing you stiffness, restless nights, and back pain.
However, if your mattress is new and comfy, this means you may have trouble sleeping. Here you can find some tips on how to overcome this problem.
We tend to ignore changes that happen under our noses, so next time you change the sheets, inspect the surface of your bed carefully. If you find lumps or the foam seems saggy, don’t just flip it over. Lumps, sagginess, and wear and tear are signs that your precious mattress won’t be able to support your sleeping needs for long.
4: There are extra sounds
If your mattress squeaks and cracks whenever you turn from one side to another, your sleep can’t be comfortable. This happens with spring mattress in time, as the coils inside are worn out from the action your body creates during the night. So, be wary of any extra sounds in your mattress!
If there is not noticeable sagging on the surface, but when you lay down, you feel like you’re in a hammock, it means the core of your foam mattress is damaged. Foam bounces back when you get up, but the back support offered by the inner foam is no longer effective.
6: It’s a bouncy castle
If you feel every movement your partner makes, and every toss and turn ends by making you feel like on a boat, it means the motion transfer of your mattress is almost gone. Of course, memory foam (or any foam mattress in general) won’t create this sensation, but a spring or inner coil mattress will. If this is the case, you know it’s time to start the separation process.
