Modern Zinc brings smart fabric technology into the bedroom

In the world of sleep technology there are plenty of exciting innovations going on  – from gadgets that read your brainwaves in bed, to wearables that promise to stop you dozing off at the wheel.

But a new startup hopes to bring cutting edge design and technology to a relatively neglected area of sleep – your bed sheets.

Launched on Kickstarter on July 1st, Modern Zinc brings the humble bed sheet into the 21st century using a brand new fabric innovation – infusing cotton fibres with zinc, a trace mineral that has several intriguing properties.

Why zinc?

Zinc might seem an odd choice for a material to snuggle up to in bed, but as well as being a fashionable choice of roofing material, zinc plays a crucial role in keeping our bodies healthy and maintained.

The second most common trace element in the body after iron, zinc is essential to our overall health and well being, including the immune system, cell division, cell growth and wound healing.

As a natural anti-bacterial, zinc actively fights the build up of bacteria growth on your sheets, meaning longer time between washes and fresher sheets, claim the makers.

But apart from the hygiene benefits, zinc may also be helpful to people with skin complaints, as one of the founders, Tristan Schmitt discovered;

“I used to suffer from acne. Like for many people, the creams and ointments did nothing to help. When I learned that fabrics like regular cotton sheets and pillow cases can hold onto oils and dirt and could be the cause of my acne, I went through the daily chore of changing my pillow case. The improvement was amazing. But that didn’t help with the rest of the sheets or the time lost in needing to take off, wash, and return my pillow case to its proper place. That’s when I took my problem to my friend Andy, who was already active in the textile industry.”

Modern Zinc uses a patented process, developed by German-based research firm Smartfiber. Weaving zinc directly into cotton fibres, the technique ensures that the zinc remains chemically active even after repeated washes. Co-founder Andy Burde explained:

“Leaps and bounds were already being made regarding “Smart Textiles”. Zinc was proving over and over again to improve health overall health– especially when it came to skin health. Zinc infused fibers were starting to make their debut on the market.

It was not only cheaper than silver infused fibers, but it was also proving to have a
rejuvenating and revitalizing effect on skin with no extra effort beyond the simple acts of going to bed and going to sleep. Zinc infused fibers has the additional benefit of being anti-bacterial and keeps the fabric smelling and feeling fresher, longer.”

Modern Zinc also say their sheets deliver in terms of comfort, spending months on product testing to eventually deciding on a 400 thread count which they claim offers the best balance between durability and breathability.
